Morning usually brings hope, so I continue to wake up earlier and earlier.
Night has the greatest despair, so I toy with the balance at 3:30 AM. I have always sprung to wake at this time, even when I was married with “kids nestled upstairs in their beds.” Now that the kids are gone, the wife is no longer hanging around, work gives and takes the same as it always had, the only difference is I have so much less to give. Slight satisfaction, a middle finger of sorts, that is really a hurt to me.
Perhaps that is why there is a limit to the day. Imagine if it was any longer? I don’t want to. It’s Saturday today, so there’s a second feeling of relief as I don’t have to worry as much about my responsibilities at work, and the responsibilities of my employees that should be making things easier for me. Wait, things just improved. I have two football games on today, the national divisional round, which has the heavily favored Chiefs taking on the underdog Texans…hmmm, there seems to be something politically incorrect about this match-up. Has anyone else seen this? Okay, so my vote is for General Custer, but we know how that ends. The second match-up is between the Commanders and the Lions. In this head-to-head, the Lions are favorites, and the Commanders (previously Redskins, ouch) are the underdogs. This is my team. Growing up, I had a lunch box (probably made from toxic tin, with paint that bleeds lead through the tin and into my food on hot days), and a thermos which I lost or was never filled, of the Washington Redskins. My brother, appropriately, had the Cowboys, so we grew up playing Cowboys and Indians (American Natives). Here we are, a half-century later, still playing Cowboys and Indians. So, I guess this is upside number three to today.
“Bang, Bang, Shwooop, Shwoop (noise for arrows)!!” You’re dead.
Things are looking up. Geez, just did a Google search on that to get a featured photo for this post, and low and behold, there are a myriad of things that pop up. So does that mean I need to quote it “ “ and give the reference? I mean, everything I write at this point in history has been said, so consider one big quotation mark at the beginning and end of every post. The reference, (World, beginning of time).
We are all just repeating lines from Seinfeld, Princess Bride, The Office, and Monty Python.
But I digress (big quotes).
And here I am, scribbling down thoughts like some sort of modern-day scribe, wondering if the echo of my words will bounce back at me from the abyss of the internet. Maybe there’s some cosmic laugh track playing out there, or perhaps it’s just the universe’s way of recycling ideas. So, if you’ve made it this far, congratulations—you’ve survived the chaos of my mind at 3:30 AM, the nostalgia of old football games, and the existential dread of originality. Stick around, because who knows what other dusty corners of my brain we’ll explore next? Like the last drop of coffee in the pot, there’s always a bit more to taste.
