Luna.

It’s the early hours of Valentine’s Day, and I find myself sitting here, reflecting on what I want to say—something meaningful, something useful to us.

Today’s writing prompt asked: If there were a biography about you, what would the title be? Naturally, many responses are filled with captivating titles—mysteries, strengths, or anything designed to draw readers in. As writers, we are spellbound by the art of crafting words that make people want to listen to our thoughts. The world isn’t so different from this. We are constantly packaging ourselves in ways that ensure we are seen, heard, and, ultimately, understood.

But in this pursuit, we can sometimes lose sight of the actual story we want to tell. We become fixated on the introduction, the clever phrasing, the bells and whistles, and sometimes, we never get around to sharing the essence of who we are. We risk leaving this world without ever having truly told our story.

And so, after much thought, I realized my title would be simply: Friend.

In every relationship I’ve had, in every role I’ve played—father, son, brother, business owner, churchgoer—I have always sought to be a friend. I am a father to three amazing kids, but I am also their friend. I am a son to my mother and late father, but I am their friend. Friendship is the thread that ties together all the different aspects of my life.

Stephen Covey, in The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People, talks about “beginning with the end in mind.” He presents an exercise where you imagine attending a funeral—your own. As people stand up to speak about you, what do you hope they will say? Those reflections often reveal what truly matters to you. If we live with that end in mind, we can shape our lives accordingly.

For me, that guiding principle is friendship. Whatever roles I take on in life, I hope they are deeply rooted in true, meaningful friendship. And so, my biography’s title would be Friend.

Oh, and did I mention? Happy Valentine’s Day.

  2. Since a friend is a chosen one, I think it is very indicative of who you see yourself as in your wanting that one word to describe you. It speaks of the trust you have that you are willing to do the work to remain the chosen one- love it.
