“Some people leave quietly. Others leave a silence that echoes for years.”
— Unknown
i packed our memories
in a suitcase
stamped return to sender
but the postage was due
and no one would pay
so i carry you still
folded between my ribs
like a crumpled letter
that once said forever
but now only bleeds
you made everything
a little more beautiful
even the sadness
that wraps itself around my lungs
and wrings out the breath
before it reaches
my dreams
you stopped
the blood from reaching
hope
cut the hands off time
before it could
build something new
i stood up
and i fell again
face to ground
grit in my teeth
your regret wore a smile
your apologies wore none
“stop looking sorry,”
you said
as if i hadn’t been born
into the ache
you left behind
you called me
a schoolyard game
a phase
a flame
a thing that burns out
because it was never meant
to be kept
“you were fun for a day,”
you said
as if my body
was a toy
as if my heart
was made
for endings
but mercy
doesn’t play favorites
and age
doesn’t grant wisdom
only wrinkles
you’ll chase
a younger version
of what once was
and resent it
for not holding the same weight
then remember
not out of love
but out of ache
for something
you never truly held
but still
can’t seem
to release
